Why I Give: Mike Garrison’s Story from Holiday Giving to Board Leadership

Sep 11, 2025 | About Us

Current Board President, Mike Garrison stumbled upon Save the Family by happenstance. In 2010, as a new Phoenix resident from Austin, TX, he was in search of an organization that paired volunteers with families needing help around the holidays. It was a cherished tradition his own family started years ago, choosing to shop for gifts for families in need, instead of exchanging gifts with one another.

A quick Google search took him to Save the Family and the rest is history. After 15 years of holiday family sponsorships, backpack drives and gala tickets, his involvement in the organization grew all the way to Save the Family Board President.

His philosophy on giving back and community involvement is simple.

“I had a very fortunate upbringing with fabulous parents and a strong support system,” Mike shared. “Most people don’t really have that. People are put in situations that are very difficult, and they need a helping hand. Sometimes it’s a big helping hand, sometimes it’s just a small nudge. But we’ve all been there.”

For Mike, Save the Family fills a unique role in addressing the housing crisis. “We’re not running shelters or focusing only on emergency services,” he explained. “We play a different role—getting people into stable, safe and affordable housing, helping them move toward financial independence.”

Mike views his support as an investment in lasting change. “From a business perspective, when you make an investment, you want to see it reap rewards,” he said. “With Save the Family, you’re helping people be part of the lasting change they need to live happy and fulfilled lives.”

Even in semi-retirement, after selling his business three years ago, Mike continues to mentor startups and invest in small companies. But his passion for Save the Family remains a cornerstone of his life—and now, it’s becoming a family tradition.

“My niece is 29 and she and her husband got married last year,” Mike shared proudly. “They sponsored their own family for Christmas last year and attended the annual gala, even securing the winning bid on a few items. She’s part of the next generation getting involved. That’s really exciting to see.”

For Mike, giving back is about more than one season of generosity. It’s about building lasting change—for families, for the community, and for generations to come.
